Working, Working

I mentioned the other day that I spent my time reorganizing my sewing room, but "organize" might be closer to the truth. When I first moved in six months ago, that was the room that all the boxes were put in while I worked on putting everything else way. Then, of course, all of those random boxes without immediate homes just ended up floating about. I would move them one way, then another, but never did anything with them. Finally tired with the whole situation I decluttered, got rid of large boxes by hanging up my costumes, and rearranged everything on my shelves. I'm designing a way to get my wigs off the last shelf, so the rest of my boxes can go there, without putting too many holes in the wall. But everything else in there is done!

This enthusiam at having things finally organized has been carried over to ther aspects of my house. It's not like it's filthy or incredibly disorganized, but there is something exciting about having everything in it's place, for once. The thing about organizing spaces: it takes some much time! But, I haven't completely neglected my sewing,  so (no pun intended) on to the exciting stuff!

I readjusted the widths of the sleeves on my Temple Dress. Satin brocade really have no give to it at all. Next time I make anything out of said material, I need to remember to make it a bit bigger to account for the lack of stretching. Yesterday morning, before work, I stitched the trim around the sleeves and collar. This means I have very little remaining: attach the frogs, slip stitch the collar facing, add a hook & eye to the back, and hem the whole thing. So excited for the finished product!

I've been working on a few other things as well:

First, this fishtail hem skirt from Vogue Pattern #2810C. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, and just had to have the pattern. Finding a fabric I wanted to use for it took a while, I finally decided on something on Black Friday a year ago. I began working on it not long before I moved, and then, of course, it got packed away and I only just pulled it back out.

The trouble from the beginning was that the hips did not fit right at all. It took a lot of back and forth to fix it all. I would put it on, right-side-out, to decide how much to pull in; then I would put in on in-side-out, marked it up, then sitched along the lines. It took four or five time of this to catch all the puckering. It would have been easier if someone could have done the marking for me, or if my dress form was the right size. Sadly enough, the form is just a bit too big. Nothing major for everyday sewing, but it won't at all work for form fitting garments.That said, I don't have a photo yet, because I can't easily photograph myself in my skirt. ^^;;

I have also started working on my tie skirt. This is a project that has been several years in the making, because I spent time to find ties I want to use. When I first told my Dad I was going to make a tie skirt, he was not impressed. He'd seen the fabric concoctions of other women with multitudes of odd, mismatched (and frankly) ugly ties, and thought I had more sense than that. XD Don't worry, Dad, I searched and scoured for a set of a ties that have a similar theme, and would not look out of place next to one another.

Right now I'm working on the the prepping. The ties need to be dismantled and the proper length determined and all before I start the actually sewing. I'll upload photos and a "how-to", once it's done. ^^
